Chapter 1: 

 

Earth energy balance:  1.3 (fun fact: in reality this heat generation comes from decay of radioactive atoms).  Answer:  6 x 1016 Watts

 

Radiation to/from a spacecraft:  1.6.  Answer:  302K

 

Radiation through semi-transparent material:  1.8.  Answer:  2500K, efficiency 3.34%.  You can use my Excel spreadsheet (http://ronney.usc.edu/AME517F09/PlanckFunction.xls).

 

Radiation through semi-transparent material: 1.11.  Answers:  (a) 66 W/m2 (b) 337 W/m2 (c) 34%
